Rafael specializes on the impact of climate change on the electric utility industry in the Western US. He consults to investors, utilities and developers in the areas of strategic planning, scenario modeling, technology implementation and investment advice in transmission and renewable resource planning. He is an electric utility expert having worked in transmission, regulatory compliance, generation technologies (solar, battery storage), project finance in the US and Latin America for over 20 years.

Columbia River System Operations Environmental Impact Statement
Over two years, Rafael Molano led a study for the Bonneville Power Administration (BPA), which assessed the environmental impact of removing dams in the lower Snake River. The study explored alternatives to the dams, including renewable energy and natural gas generation.
Battery Storage as a Transmission Asset
Led the initiative to implement battery storage as a transmission asset. This project explored innovative ways to integrate battery storage into existing energy infrastructure, optimizing grid performance and supporting renewable energy expansion.
NorthernGrid
In 2020, NorthernGrid was formed through negotiations among 13 electric utilities in the Pacific Northwest. Rafael Molano led these negotiations on behalf of the Bonneville Power Administration (BPA). For his role in the successful formation of NorthernGrid, he was recognized as the "Contractor of the Year" in 2021.

As founder or co-founder of three startups and one investment bank, Rafael Molano held multiple positions ranging from partner to COO, CFO and VP of Product Development developing the companies from concept to funding and business operations.
